Shady Rooftops Are In! Thanks YIMBY Qld!
This year, YIMBY Qld has had its first major win in relation to planning laws with the Brisbane City Council set to overturn restrictive rules to stop homeowners and developers from being able to shade their rooftop spaces.
Put simply, we have a City Plan that encourages roof top recreation facilities, yet puts barriers up to shading these spaces, which makes no sense in our sub-tropical environment. This makes it all but impossible to put a solid roof over rooftop BBQs, pools, gyms etc.
Such structures are considered an additional storey to the building, and we know how that plays out in community and media campaigning against new development. YIMBY Qld believes this is one of those ‘nannying’ laws that needed to be overturned, particularly considering the weather we have in Queensland. We lobbied the Brisbane City Council for a change to the regulations and have had a major win.
In the recently released Brisbane Future Blueprint the council announced it will be making a change to the rules in line with YIMBY Qld’s submissions.
